Artist Profiles: Loreen

Loreen participated in Eurovision in 2012 with her dance track Euphoria, which still to this day remains as one of the most loved Eurovision winners in recent history. What has she been up to since her Eurovision win?

Soon after her win at Eurovision, the song Euphoria charted at number 3 in the UK official singles chart, which is the highest position for a non-UK Eurovision entry since Johnny Logan’s release of Hold Me Now back in 1987. A few months after Eurovision she built on this success and released her debut album called Heal. The album was certified platinum in Sweden within 2 weeks of its release. The album featured Euphoria, as well as a previous Melodifestivalen song called My Heart is Refusing Me.

After travelling around Europe in 2012 to appear on various television shows, she then later re-released her album Heal to feature the song We Got the Power, which was performed at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest.

In 2014, Loreen featured as one of the artists working on Art on Ice, which is a live music tour with performances from figure skaters. The tour took place in Sweden, Finland and Switzerland. Also in early January, Swedish broadcaster brought back a series where well known Swedish artists travel north of the country to meet with talented Sami to collaborate and create music together. Loreen featured in the first episode.

Also in 2014, she announced that she would be releasing a second album. In the summer of 2014, she was nominated for three Rockbjörnen and five World Music Awards. She fulfilled many engagements across Europe and beyond, including a performance in Kazakhstan for the Eurasian Music Awards.

In March of 2015, a new single was released, called Paper Light (Higher). Her upcoming album was to be called Paperlight. Also in 2015, she performed at the Eurovision Song Contest’s Greatest Hits show which was filmed in London and produced by the BBC and EBU to commemorate 60 years of the contest.

Another single, titled I’m in it With You was released on the 14th of August in 2015, and generally received positive reviews. Late 2015, Loreen released her next single, Under ytan (Under the Surface) which was a cover of the song by Uno Svenningsson. This was her first official Swedish language song released, and although it was positively reviewed, the song performed poorly commercially.

During this time, the album that has been in the works all this time has still yet to be released. During an interview conducted in 2016, she claims the album would either be released at the end of 2016 or early 2017, which would mean it’s the first album in over 4 years.

Currently, Loreen will be preparing for her next big appearance, which is for Melodifestivalen 2017. It was announced she would be performing the song Statements in the 4th semi-final, and last in the running order. If she wins, it would mean she would be performing at Eurovision once again.

Loreen also involves herself in political activism, mainly in the field of helping underprivileged children and fighting for children’s rights. In 2013, she was the ambassador of the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, and through this she travelled to Kabul and engaged with locals in surrounding villages with a strong focus on education and constructing a new school.
