Rehearsal Day 2 – Armenia

Yesterday was a huge first day in the Eurovision arena, with the first 10 artists taking to the stage for the first rehearsals. Today we’ve got the next round of artists from the first semi-final, and it features some of the contest favourites! Here’s the action from Day 2!

Armenia

Following something as intense as Finland in the running order, the challenge for Armenia is to stand out with a power ballad. Armenia have delivered the complete opposite of Finland, and it’s making an impact.

Visuals:

Another dark performance of this semi-final, the song begins with minimal lighting. Surrounding Sevak is a prop structure of a series of blocks, with the tallest behind him, and shorter as it runs around in to a circle. Sevak is in the centre, and these blocks are illuminated at various levels as the song progresses.

The lighting is one of the better shows of today, with the intensity growing as the song grows. It all feels very synchronised, which is something some of the other acts today have been lacking. Camera shots from behind Sevak will prove to be visually impressive when the audience is shown throughout the arena, with a series of lights beaming into the audience. Overall I think this looks really good.

Costuming:

As expected, we’ve got Sevak in black once again, but the costume is different from what we saw in the national final. He has a long cardigan type garment on which is textured, but the length of the garment proves to be important as the wind machine kicks in. Although the staging is dark, and his outfit is dark, it still looks very impressive.

Vocals

It’s definitely not the stand out of the day, but first run through and there’s certainly no big issues here. If anything, he needs to be louder in the first verse (this was fixed in the second time around), but as he progresses into the song he really shines. Both the performance and his vocals come across as organic, and less produced, which will contrast from the boisterous performance of Finland previous.
