2016 Reviews – Slovenia – ManuElla – Blue and Red

Slovenia has chosen something a little different this year in ManuElla and her song Blue and Red. We haven’t heard much of this country-pop genre in Eurovision, so will it take Europe (and Australia) by storm?

This song has a definite country twang to it, and would easily fit into the country music scene. I just don’t know if it will fit into Eurovision. The song itself, I find to be quite repetitive, and it does build over the 3 minutes but not as much as I’d like. For majority of the song it stays at the same intensity, so once I’ve heard a third of the song, that’s all there really is to it.

I personally don’t love the country sound, so it’s hard for me to love this song. Saying that, there’s been many times where the chorus has been stuck in my head. The thing is, I just don’t want it stuck in my head! Even listening to it over and over to review, I’m starting to really dread pressing replay.

Song aside, ManuElla is a talented singer, and there’s no doubt that she can sing. We saw in the Eurovision pre-parties that she can work the stage and get the audiences clapping along – which is a good thing. She has this sassiness and confidence about her that will be to her advantage on stage.

As for the stage performance, we already know that it will feature an acrobat, fireworks and a wind machine. So in other words, it’s going to be completely over the top, but I’m not sure that even these tactics will help them reach the final. Semi-2 can go either way, so this has just as much chance as the others, but I feel like it’s going to be left behind, and to be honest, I wouldn’t miss it if it didn’t qualify.

I’m going to give this a 5/10.
