2021 Junior Eurovision Reviews – Serbia

While Serbia won Eurovision on their independent debut, the nation hasn’t had such luck at Junior Eurovision. Their best result is currently 3rd place, but hoping to improve on that is the duo of Jovana and Dunja. The pair will sing ‘Children’s Eyes’ at this year’s contest, but how will it fare?

Throughout their Junior Eurovision history, Serbia has more often than not maintained a consistent strategy. The nation loves a mid-tempo track, as much as they love a ballad. Their last three entries have fallen into those categories, however yielded minimal success. This year, they are sticking with that strategy, however unfortunately I believe this will lead to the same results.

Children’s Eyes is an inoffensive track performed by two likeable young artists. The start of the track is more like spoken word, which may struggle to catch the attention of audiences. It then launches into a mid-tempo track with a fairly generic beat. The chorus is the highlight of the song, as it has the most memorable melody of the track.

Performance + Act

I expect that the stage performance will rely on Jovana and Dunja interacting with each other and creating a really sweet atmosphere. While the song may fail to make a huge impact, there is potential to create something special visually. The song doesn’t demand a high energy performance, but rather will rely on the connection with the camera and each other.

Conclusions

This is a nice song, but I do believe it will fall to the same fate as the previous few Serbian entries. The risk of being an inoffensive song is that it gets forgotten and becomes more of a ‘filler’ song, and even if the duo impresses on the night, I don’t know if I can see this reaching the Top 10.

Song + Vocals

One of the sweeter songs and vocals of the year come from Serbia, with the two girls Jovana and Dunja teaming up. Although the title is in English, lyrics are written in Serbian language. The song has the sound of a pop ballad from the beginning of this century and has good harmonies in it. It makes sense this was internally chosen because of that.

Performance + Act

I’m curious to see and hear the girls from Serbia doing a live performance together. How will they interact together or will it be a performance of two solists together on stage? This will determine whether they will get a very good score, or perhaps end up somewhat lower on the table.

Conclusions

For me judging the Serbian song and predicting their potential at the Junior Eurovision 2021 is difficult, because we only have a studio recording of their entry. And at Eurovision, it’s the live performance that matters most. Especially with a duet with such harmonies, it’s important to get that right. Even though the cute nature and appeal of this song, can help cover it up.
