With less than 24 hours to go until Australia crowns their next Eurovision star, we spoke to multi-talented artist iOTA, who will be opening this year’s selection with a bang with his song, ‘Life.’
Who is iota?
iOTA is one of the lesser known artists in the line-up this year, but in fact, he has had a long career in the entertainment industry. Not only a singer, he describes himself as ‘an artist, a creative human being, a musician, a writer and a painter. Just someone who likes to move and sing and have a nice time on stage.’
Notably, iOTA has played a character in The Rocky Horror Show, and Mad Max: Fury Road, and this acting experience has been instrumental in how iOTA performs as a musician on stage. He described that in his early days in music, he found himself to be so rigid in his movements, but acting has made him ‘totally free’ on stage.
‘It was the right song’
iOTA received his Eurovision: Australia Decides entry through the SBS portal, where songwriters can submit their entries to be paired up with the participants. After hearing the song for the first time, iOTA thought that it was ‘a nice song’ however it was when he listened to it multiple times that he realised that it was the perfect song for him, so much so that he was ‘walking around the house singing it!’
It’s also an ideal song to open or close the show, and iOTA shared in that sentiment. He anticipated either of those positions, but confirms that first place ‘is the perfect spot’ and is happy with that decision.
Australia Decides 2020 will take place at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on the 7th of February. The show will be broadcasted live on SBS from 7:30PM AEST, and will also be live streamed via SBS Australia’s Facebook from 9:30AM GMT.
