Alternative Rock group Softengine participated at Eurovision back in 2014 with the song ‘Something Better’. The group finished in 11th place in the final, which at that time, was Finland’s best placing since 2006.
Who are Softengine?
The Finnish band was formed in the city of Seinäjoki back in 2011, with the line-up changing over the years. The lead singer of the group is Topi Latukka, with Ossi Mäkelä and Tuomo Alarinta joining Topi in the most recent line-up of the band. At Eurovision, the group featured a total of five members, with Eero Keskinen and Henri Oskár rounding out the five.
The group does not seem to be still together, however Topi Latukka has since released music as a solo act.
The Journey to Eurovision
After participating in band competitions and various gigs, the group were announced as one of the competing acts in the Finnish national selection, Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu, otherwise known as UMK. The group won their heat to advance to the UMK final, which they also went on to win.
The group represented Finland at Eurovision with the song ‘Something Better’, with the nation qualifying in 3rd place in the semi-final. Overall, the group finished in 11th place in the final with 72 points.
What Happened Next?
Not long after their participation at Eurovision, the group released their follow up single titled ‘Yellow House’. By September of the same year, bass guitarist Eero Keskinen left the band in order to focus on his career as a lighting technician.
In October 2014, the group released their next single titled ‘The Sirens’, with the official video released around two weeks later. On the same day, Softengine released their debut album titled ‘We Created the World’ The album featured 11 songs, including their Eurovision entry and the aforementioned singles.
By the end of 2014, the group released the single, ‘What If I?’ alongside a music video.
In 2015, Softengine performed at UMK as guests, showcasing their Eurovision entry in an acoustic form. In June of the same year, the group released the single ‘All About You and I’ which was featured on and EP titled ‘From Earth, From Ashes, From Dust’.
The final single from the group is titled ‘She Is My Messiah’, with no new music coming from the group since. Lead singer Topi Latukka has released singles as a solo act, exclusively in the Finnish language. His debut single ‘Pehmeitä pintoi’ was released in 2018, and his most recent solo single was released in 2020, titled ‘En Keksi sanoja’.
