2021 Junior Eurovision Reviews – Bulgaria

After a four year absence, Bulgaria returns to Junior Eurovision this year with a duo. Denislava and Martin will represent the nation with the song ‘Voice of Love’, co-written by former Macedonian Eurovision representative, Vasil.

After a string of very strong entries at Junior Eurovision, Bulgaria returns this year with an underwhelming composition. The cliché, Disney-style duet is outdated for a contest that has become increasingly contemporary in recent years. In comparison to its competitors, this song falls completely flat. There’s no real excitement throughout the three minutes, and lyrically it hits all the usual clichés of a love song. The backing track is basic, and could have done with stronger instrumentation to really enhance the song.

The saving grace of the song is certainly the vocals. The duo work incredibly well together, and both have very angelic vocals. For such beautiful vocals, it is a shame that the song doesn’t really reach the high standards set by other competing nations.

Performance + Act

I suspect that the nation will continue with the ‘Disney’ theme and produce a fantasy-like staging for the song. While it seems suitable for the song, it would add to the predictability of the entry. Should the duo have a nice connection on stage, this has the potential to charm some viewers, but I can’t imagine it will perform strongly in either televote nor jury vote.

Conclusions

This is a nice entry, but it’s not the type of entry that you will remember after the show. Even with the potential of strong vocals, I feel that Bulgaria will find themselves lower on the scoreboard than they would hope.

I see Bulgaria as a powerhouse at Junior Eurovision, they have had excellent results in the past. This year they sent us a lullaby-duet by a boy and a girl. I could see this being used in a cartoon movie during a romantic scene.

Performance + Act

I am not too convinced the duo can connect together on stage, and become more than just two loose singers next to each other on stage. I think this is important for Bulgaria to have success again. There is potential in the composition, although it is a bit cliché in the build-up. But if executed well, it could gather enough points for a nice result.

Conclusions

Duets are hard to execute, because you need a strong connection with each other to make it believable. And for children in particular, this is not easy to do. If Denislava and Martin manage to do so, they have a good chance of getting a lot of the big points. Otherwise this song could be overlooked in the strong field of 2021.
