This year, after a national final, Norway is offering Agnete with the song Icebreaker. We haven’t seen the blonde beauty much on tour around Europe like the other artists, but maybe she’s saving everything she’s got for Eurovision? Here’s what we think of Icebreaker..
Icebreaker is an interesting song, because it’s almost like 3 songs in one. You have the verses, which have a beat that builds so much tension, and you know that something is about to drop. Then you get to the pre-chorus, which is one step above the verses, and you’re just waiting for that chorus to hit – and then it changes beat again to a slower beat. Then we have a slight change for the bridge too. The changes could either make the song more interesting, or make it feel more disjointed, and it’s up to the viewer to decide how the song makes them feel.
I think the composition of this is unique in the sense that it is in these quite separate sections, but at the core, I think this is a pretty generic pop song. I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing, because this is Eurovision we’re talking about, and there’s always a spot for generic pop. The lyrics are pretty cheesy, but that’s to be expected – it’s nothing offensive so I can’t complain.
For the staging, I think we can expect a white dress – just an educated guess. I think we might see a similar staging to the performance in the national final, which was nothing original or special but it worked for the song. A good light show behind it would pick this song up and drop it in the final. I don’t think this is at threat of not qualifying, but it’s a song I wouldn’t necessarily miss if it wasn’t in the final.
I don’t think this song is anything too special, but saying that, I also don’t dislike it. It’s just somewhere in the middle for me, and gets lost in-between so many other great songs. For that reason, I’m going to give it a 6.5/10.
