Bulgaria Finally Unveils their 2017 Artist and Song!
Once again, Bulgaria has been one of the last nations to announce their song and artist combination, however we now know who has the difficult task of following on from Poli Genova, who gave Bulgaria their best ever placing at Eurovision last year with the song If Love Was A Crime. This year, Bulgaria has selected a young artist, Kristian Kostov with the song Beautiful Mess.
You may recall that earlier in the national final season, Bulgarian broadcaster put out a call for proposals from record labels and producers, and the actual process was pretty extensive. The search demonstrated a reinvigorated effort to bring success to Bulgaria at Eurovision. The Bulgarian head of delegation Joana Levieva-Sawyer is pleased with the result of the search and efforts put in this year, and claims they received more projects than anticipated considering how extensive the proposal requirements were.
The song itself is composed by Borislav Milanov from Bulgaria, Sebastian Armann from Austria and Joacim Bo Persson from Sweden, who were all a part of last year’s entry If Love Was A Crime. They are also the team behind the Serbian and Macedonian entries for 2017, making them a very in demand group of writers and composers! The song itself, which is called Beautiful mess has been commented on by Kristian himself, ‘Beautiful Mess is authentic, interesting and transmits the sentiment and the main idea of the song. I like the song, because it’s what I am. Last November, I started working with Bobby [the composer Borislav Milanov] with the idea to submit a song for Eurovision either for this year or next. As a performer, now I’m trying to find myself and actually Beautiful Mess is my first song that has a deeper meaning. I like it a lot. My vision for the future is actually to do projects that make sense, so that’s a step in the right direction for me. Besides this, my fans will see me in a different light than in my past projects, so I am really curious to find out what their reaction will be’
Kristian himself is the youngest performer in the contest this year, and was born in Moscow on the 15th of March, 2000 – do you feel old yet? Kristian’s father is Bulgarian, and his mother is from Kazakhstan, which demonstrates this year’s theme ‘Celebrate Diversity.’ In 2014, he was one of the finalists of the Voice Kids in Russia, and was mentored by Dima Bilan, who you will recognise as the Russian Eurovision representative in 2006 and 2008, with 2008 being the year he won the contest. Kristian says that Dima inspired him to give his best week after week, and now, Kristian is following in the same footsteps as his mentor.
