It has now been announced by the Czech broadcaster that the group Lake Malawi have won the national selection with their entry, Friend of a Friend.
The national selection was similar to last year’s, where the songs would be published online where the public would vote for their favourite, while an international jury consisting of well-known figures in the Eurovision world would also vote for their favourites.
This year there were 8 entries competing – here is the full list:
- Andrea Holá – Give Me A Hint
- Barbora Mochowa – True Colors
- Hana Barbara – Poslední Slova Tobě
- Jakub Ondra – Space Sushi
- Jara Vymer – On My Knees
- Pam Rabbit – Easy To Believe
- Lake Malawi – Friend Of A Friend
- Tomáš Boček – Don’t Know Why
In the public vote, Lake Malawi finished in second behind Jakub Ondra and in the jury vote, the group finished in equal first place with Barbora Mochowa. The combined score gave Lake Malawi the lead, meaning that they will represent the Czech Republic at Eurovision with the song Friend of a Friend.
Lake Malawi is an indie-pop band which formed in 2013 under lead singer Albert Černý. The name of the group is inspired by a Bon Iver song, and due to their wish to become internationally known, the group performs in English rather than native language. The band consists of Albert Černý (lead vocal, guitar), Jeroným Šubrt (bass and keys), Antonín Hrabal (drums) and Pavel Palát (drums).
