The Netherlands is a staple at Junior Eurovision, having participated in every contest since it began. While the nation has a mixed history, their last two participations landed in the Top 5. Will Ayana continue that trend with ‘Mata Sugu Aō Ne’?
Anita:
Song + Vocals
After two upbeat entries in a row, Ayana brings a change of pace. The slower entry is a nice addition to this year’s field, made even more unique with the Japanese language and styling. The song features three languages, Dutch, English and Japanese. The nation is known for their intertwining of languages, and this song is no exception. The switch between the languages is done well, and the English gives some context for those who don’t understand Dutch.
The track grows well over the three minutes, with tender verses and powerful choruses. We know from the national selection that Ayana can perform the song relatively confidently, although at times it feels a bit flat.
Performance + Act
While I enjoyed some of the Japanese aspects of the staging at the national selection, I found the performance too choreographed. It was almost as if Ayana was dancing to an upbeat track, and for me, it didn’t quite reach the potential. The props on stage help share the message of the song, but I think they could be utilised in a less awkward way. I think if The Netherlands really wants to play on the Japanese elements of the song, they should go all out. A beautiful scene with mountains or cherry blossoms backing Ayana could give a lovely effect on camera.
Conclusions
Earlier in the season when there were fewer entries revealed, I had this placed much higher. Now that we know the full field, I think The Netherlands may struggle to reach the heights of their previous two entries. I think a mid-table finish is fair for this entry.

Dennis:
Song + Vocals
Ayana might be one of the better vocalists of the competition in 2021. She has a sweet song with Japanese influences. Giving it something unique within the field of songs. I would expect the jury to give this more points than the public vote will.
Performance + Act
In the Dutch national final we saw some Japanese aspects and a suitcase, telling the story of the Dutch entry a bit. I think they could do that even more because Ayana needs all the help to make her small song stand out in the field of songs at Junior Eurovision 2021.
Conclusions
I don’t know whether the small unique features make the Dutch entry unique and memorable enough? There are multiple strong and more contemporary ballads taking part in 2021. Vocally Ayana is strong, but I suspect more is needed to make enough impact.
