2015 JESC Reviews – Italy – Chiara and Martina – Viva
After a win on debut, Italy’s participants this year Chiara and Martina Scarpari have some big shoes to fill. The song they will be singing is called Viva, penned by Gigi D’Alessio. Will Italy make it two in a row?
In short, no. Viva is such an outdated sounding song (and don’t get me started on that music video – could they have made anything worse?) and unfortunately this song doesn’t have any of the class or emotion that Vincenzo gave during his performance last year. My standards for Italy are always slightly higher because I know their music scene well, and I know the quality of songs coming out of the country at this moment and this just doesn’t sit well with me.
This saddens me because even though I am not a fan of the tone of their voices, I definitely think they can sing, even live they have really good harmonies together. I also like Gigi D’Alessio so I feel slightly disappointed with the package as a whole. Performing on the night in 4th place I feel won’t do them any favours, as it’s just an awkward place in the running order.
I hate to be so negative about a country I love, but at the end of the day, it’s a song contest and I’m just not impressed with the song. I really hate to give this such a low rating, but it’s in the same low league as Montenegro, Russia and Bulgaria for me, and I genuinely can’t see this doing magical things on the night.
