2016 Reviews – Armenia – Iveta Mukuchyan – LoveWave

Armenia went completely internal this year to choose their act and song, and out of that process came Iveta Mukuchyan and the song LoveWave.

The song begins with a small monologue, before transitioning into what I don’t know – a verse or an intro. I actually don’t feel the song truly starts until after the first build-up into the chorus. This song is a bit strange in composition, and I will admit that the first few times I listened to it, I really couldn’t get into it. It was as if they had made a whole bunch of teasers for the song, and put them together. It doesn’t seem like a cohesive composition, and it does bother me.

Without doubt Iveta’s voice is amazing, and that’s been proved at the Russian pre-party. The instrumentation of the song is also very good – a feature characteristic of the more Eastern nations. It’s a good mix of modern and traditional music, and it complements her powerful voice.

Although I’ve warmed up to the song, I still find the first 50 seconds or so really hard to connect to, and obviously that’s the first thing viewers will hear of the song, and they might automatically lose interest – or alternatively, it might bring more interest to the song. It’s overall a confusing song for me, and I’m confused because I can’t really tell if I like it or not. That said, it’s miles above their entry last year, which was just a tad messy…

I think we can expect a pretty intense stage show, and I’m sure Iveta will have something spectacular to wear, the fashionista she is. Other than that, it’s hard to predict what it will be like on stage!

With that all being said, I am really struggling to give it a score. I think a 6.5/10 is pretty accurate for how I feel about it. The last 2/3rds of the song is good, and the instrumentation and her voice is good, but the structure of the song still bothers me, and I’m curious to see if it bothers the audience in May as well. Although I do think this is probably a confident qualifier.
