2016 Reviews – Ireland – Nicky Byrne – Sunlight

After a few failed attempts at the final, the Irish broadcaster decided to internally select Nicky Byrne (former Westlife member, just if you were wondering) with the song Sunlight. The song is an upbeat pop song, and very radio friendly, but will it succeed at Eurovision?

Hmm. I think that this song is lucky to be in the second semi-final, where it’s anyone’s game. As much as this song is radio friendly, it is also lacking in a little somethin’ somethin’. I suppose what is lacking is the unpredictability. From the first verse, you know where the song is going, and once you’ve heard the verse and chorus, that’s all there really is for you to hear.

What this does have going for it is a crazy amount of fangirls and fanboys who will vote for Nicky, and that would have been the case irrelevant of the song. The support is immense for this song, but looking from a non-biased (non-westlife listener) I think this song is outdated, and it’s a shame because it seems as if the broadcaster has really tried to turn things around this year. Last year with Molly was a real tragedy because they had a top-notch song, just not enough luck on the night. If that didn’t make it, I don’t know if this will – and if it does, I think it’s purely because of the fame around him.

As for the stage performance, I can’t really pick which direction they will take it. I think they’ll repeat the ‘have backing singers that are super good to distract from the average lead singing’ strategy they used for Jedward back in the day, but other than that, I’m not sure what tactics they will use, or whether they will keep it quite simple.

Overall, I think this is a pretty average song, and at this point I can’t really say if it’s a qualifier or not. Safe to say there are better songs, but at the same time I wouldn’t be surprised to see this in the final. I’m going to give it a 5/10 – average score for an average song *cue the fangirls and fanboys virtually killing me*
