2016 Reviews – Moldova – Lidia Isac – Falling Stars

Moldova, at least for me, has been a country which has gone completely under the radar this year. Their national selection seemed to be forgotten amongst others, but regardless, we have a performer, Lidia Isac, and she will be taking the pop number titled Falling Stars. Will this cliché song be able to compete with the tough competition in semi-final 1?

I won’t lie, the first time I’ve listened to this song entirely was to sit down and write this review. I’d only really heard the chorus in recap videos, and if I wasn’t interested in listening to the whole song, I’m sure you can assume where this review is going. The song is so predictable from the first second, and lacks the interest that many of the other songs this year have. This is the type of song which would have been popular in contests long gone, and probably would have done well, but in 2016, this isn’t up to scratch.

Lidia’s vocal performance is not to be laughed at, although reaching some of the higher notes seems to be a bit of a struggle for her. It’s just a shame her voice couldn’t be utilised in a song which was more modern or at least a bit more unpredictable. The backing music sounds like standard, generic pop, and offers nothing diverse to appreciate, and I think it’s a shame.

Her stage performance, knowing Moldova’s history, will be completely ridiculous, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some sort of tactic which will completely take away from the song – maybe some literal falling stars, I mean, who knows.

This seems to be the guilty pleasure of many Eurovision fans, and if it was in semi-final 2, I’d give it a slight chance of qualification, but in the situation it’s in, I really can’t see it making any impact at all. I wouldn’t want to see it in the final, as for me, it takes away a place that a better quality song could have had.

For me personally, this song does absolutely nothing, although is better than a few of the offerings this year, so I’ll give it a 4/10.
