2016 Reviews – Switzerland – Rykka – The Last of Our Kind
Switzerland in recent years has been quite hit and miss in Eurovision, but could this be their year to make Europe listen? The artist who will be representing Switzerland is Rykka, who’s from Canada, but has roots in Switzerland. The song she will be singing is called The Last of Our Kind, and here’s what we think…
This has the makings of a really successful song. The song transitions quickly between verse, pre-chorus and chorus, but doesn’t feel rushed. The melody was one of the only to catch my attention early on in the national final season, and it’s still one of the songs I enjoy now. The song builds well over the 3 minutes, thanks to the key change at the end. The key change also gives the sense of a more spectacular ending, but it all depends on the vocal execution on the night.
And that brings me to my next point. I mentioned before that this has the makings of a successful song but I think there one thing that is holding it back, and that’s the live vocals. I’m in no means saying they’re terrible, but there are just some notes in this song that she just misses. However, she has had months to work on this, and backing singers could potentially ‘cover’ some of the shortcomings, so hopefully on stage we see a confident vocal performance!
As for the stage performance, I liked the look of her almost floating in mid-air, with the smoke underneath. She has this angelic look to her, so it will be interesting to see if this overall look is going to be used on stage at Eurovision – but not long now before we find out!
I would personally love to see this in the final, although I know there’s a very real possibility that it will just miss out. I do think this song is overrated, but I’m not sure if it’s just because I see the potential. I’ve always imagined someone like Sia singing this song, and it makes me realise that the song is really quite good, and the only thing missing was a confident voice behind it.
I’m going to give this song a 7.5/10.
