2016 Reviews – Georgia – Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitaz – Midnight Gold

Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitaz were chosen internally by the Georgian public broadcaster, then it was up to the public to send in songs in which would fit the band’s style. After a show previewing all 5 songs, the Georgian public could then choose their favourite, and Midnight Gold was the winner, but is it my winner?

Well, it’s not that far off. This is definitely one of my favourite songs of the year, and I think that I might be the only one to say that. I really enjoy the tone of Nika’s voice throughout the song, and the melody of the song is one that from first listen I really caught on to. I find it easy to sing along with, and what’s interesting about this song is that it never really has a clear chorus, you could even say that the guitar solo’s act as choruses. It’s almost like the song is a circle, it starts where it ends, with the same lyric, but it’s a circle I keep wanting to go around.

With the revamp, there were some changes, and the change of intensity of the beat at the end adds diversity to the song, before changing back to the original beat, and ending the song quite abruptly. I think this is a cool, alternative song, and it offers something different to the contest this year. I think it’s important to see a diverse range of music in Eurovision, and although we have witnessed rock in many forms, we haven’t seen a whole lot of music similar to this, so I think it’s great.

I’ll be interested to see how this is staged, and although unfortunately I’m not sure this will qualify, I at least hope their staging isn’t too out there, but I feel it needs something to plant it in the memories of the audiences – but I guess we will just have to wait and see what they do on stage. I also haven’t heard this live, I don’t think, or maybe, other than the national final, so I’m overall excited to see this on stage.

I really love this song, and I’d love for it to do well, or at least get to the final so I can vote for it! I’m giving this a 9/10.
