Ireland has chosen: It’s Nicky Byrne with Sunlight

The Eurovision fanatics have done it again, they rumoured that Nicky Byrne would represent Ireland, and they were right! It was announced this week that the former Westlife singer would be representing the country in this years’ contest with the song Sunlight – which we didn’t have to wait long to hear!

Nicky, as part of the boy band Westlife has performed to arenas across the world, so therefore has the experience of playing to large crowds. This time, he will be taking on Stockholm with a song written by renowned songwriter Wayne Hector and award winning composer Ronan Hardiman.  Wayne Hector has written songs for One Direction, Britney Spears, and Jason Derulo, just to name a few, and also wrote some of Westlife’s most popular songs.

Ireland’s broadcaster RTE decided to change their selection process up, and move away from the Eurosong format which in previous years has divided opinions and caused controversy. John McHugh, the Head of Entertainment for RTE has stated that they decided to review the Eurosong process and decided ultimately that their process should be flexible to ensure that the nation is sending the best possible option in order to succeed at the contest.
