Since 2015, it has been an ongoing question as to whether Australia will be invited back to compete at Eurovision. Now, it has been confirmed that the nation will have a secure place in the contest at least until 2023.
This year marks the fifth participation at the contest, and it was previously assessed year by year however SBS and Blink TV have secured another 5 years at the contest. The Eurovision Reference Group have decided that it was a natural progression to continue Australia’s participation at the contest, especially due to the dedication Australia shows at Eurovision and their popularity in the contest.
SBS Commissioning Editor Josh Martin has commented on the news, saying, ‘SBS has been the home of the Eurovision Song Contest in Australia for 35 years and we’re thrilled at this invitation to become a more permanent member of the Eurovision Song Contest family; We will continue to showcase Australia’s amazing talent and diversity to hundreds of millions of people across Europe and the world. It highlights the power of music to bring people together – even from polar opposite sides of the globe. Thank you Europe!’
This year Australia will be represented by Kate Miller-Heidke who was recently selected through the debut year of a national selection for Australia. You can watch her performance below:
